An Afrikan Caribbean Perspective

Named after the 14th century Sankore University in Timbuktu, Kuumba's Sankore Library is unique in that it is the only Afrikan/Caribbean resource library in Bristol. Sankore provides a service for students of Afrikan/Caribbean history and culture, a sector not usually catered for in the mainstream educational curriculum.

The Sankore library aims at satisfying this need with a hold on a wide range of resources, DVD’s, books, videos, magazine’s, dissertations and much more. Sankore is currently under refurbishment welcoming volunteer input in its development.

The Library aims to:

  • Provide an environment where all people are welcome;
  • Provide access to books that have often in the past been marginalised;
  • Provide an alternative African/Caribbean perspective;
  • To encourage all library users to question history;
  • To provide an educational/resource base for children, students & teachers;
  • To promote African/Caribbean history/issues to everyone in a relaxed environment;
