Artistic Policy

Kuumba’s overall policy objectives for Afrikan and Caribbean arts are:
- To develop, support and advance Afrikan Caribbean cultural artistic activity
in Bristol, by giving information and expertise to any organisation, group
or individual concerned with and involved in the practice and consumption
of Afrikan and Caribbean arts;
- To counter the misleading stereotype of Afrikan and Caribbean art forms,
frequently viewed as exotic (low status) arts. To endeavour to represent
the arts created by Afrikan and Caribbean artists from the Afrikan diaspora
within our programming, with a view to providing for an audience that
is sporadically if at all catered for by mainstream activity;
- To programme workshops in educational institutions, youth clubs and community
groups from a diverse age range. Thereby encouraging the involvement of
visiting artists to give workshops where ever possible as a way of introducing
role models to children and to facilitate a better understanding of Afrikan
and Caribbean culture and artistic forms;
- To work with all voluntary networking groups, statutory agencies and national
bodies. To ensure that there is a continuing debate relating to the issues
relevant to the creative and cultural interests of the Afrikan and Caribbean
communities;
- To develop in-house groups by providing a forum in which Afrikan and Caribbean
artists working or based in Bristol can articulate and discuss needs,
share experience, skills and develop critical perspectives of their work;
- To provide access training to develop cultural awareness, develop skills
and empowerment in film and video and other media activity. To provide
a culturally diverse base in which real sharing and training can take
place;
- To develop an Afrikan and Caribbean arts strategy with local authorities,
regional arts associations and voluntary groups;
- To co-ordinate existing Afrikan and Caribbean arts groups, activities
and services and to support their continued development and promotion;
- To research and establish activities for the elderly. Work with the elderly
will extend to the development of reminiscence projects where local people
share their experience.
