Mission and Aims

Kuumba Arts and Community Resource Centre, based in
Hepburn Road, St. Paul’s, is Bristol’s and the South West
Region’s leading and longest established black arts centre. The
original premises have been improved and extended and now, in our 33rd
year, there is a vision for a new purpose built arts venue.
The mission since it’s inception in 1974, has been to support and
develop cultural, artistic and educational events and workshops, which
reflect the history and heritage of Afrikan and Afrikan Caribbean people.
Not only for the benefit of local residents, but also to promote and raise
awareness about the range of Afrikan and Afrikan Caribbean arts on a local,
regional, national and international level.
Kuumba is registered as a Friendly Society No: 21238R.
The aims of Kuumba are:
- To present an artistically challenging, high quality
and diverse programme of new work by Afrikan and Afrikan Caribbean artists
and companies;
- To positively represent Afrikan and Afrikan Caribbean
arts and encourage wider cultural awareness and engagement with the
work at local, regional, national and international level;
- To increase access to and participation in the
arts within the black community, in particular targeting elders and
young people;
- Provide practical support and guidance to artists,
local groups and individuals who are actively involved in the arts in
the region;
- To provide affordable childcare services that are
culturally sensitive;
- Promote a community education programme from an
Afrikan perspective;
- Provide and offer community-based resources
for the benefit and use of the local community;
- To provide and further develop work space units
to support new projects and to increase income generation;
- To provide education and training opportunities
as appropriate;
